The grace of office

Hi Reader,

Work can take a lot out of you.

It can be physically strenuous, or emotionally draining.

When we were in the thick of the recent pandemic, I remember watching the healthcare workers in the news, and wondering, "How do they do it? How are they able to care for their patients, day after harrowing day?"

Well, many of them were overwhelmed.

They were just too professional to let it show.

Behind the scenes, they sought therapy, or found comfort in support groups.

Some of them sang to each other during work breaks, to refill their emotional tanks.

Others prayed for grace, to give them the inner strength to keep going.

Lately, I've been reflecting on the power of grace.

Those reflections were turned up a notch this month, when the conclave elected a new Pope to lead the 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.

In the process, I was introduced to the term "the grace of office."

It's the spiritual strength bestowed upon the Pope, when he assumed his role, so he'd be able to do the work well.

This grace is available to all of us.

When the job you choose is aligned with what your soul is here to do in the world, grace can show up in many ways.

A kind word from another.

A fifth gear of energy to help you go the distance...when you thought you only had four gears.

Projects flowing smoothly, and feeling good, even when the work is strenuous.

The right words popping into your head, to help encourage someone on your team.

So...if you're given a leadership role - don't shrink from the opportunity.

Your ego may tell you all the reasons it's a bad idea.

Some of those reasons may be valid.

But if it's mostly a fear of the unknown, or a fear you won't be a good leader...

Remember that, no matter how large or small that leadership role is, you can lean on the grace of office.

Rock on, Reader ✌️
